Tulane University Barbara Greenbaum House

at Tulane University
New Orleans, Louisiana

Waggonner & Ball collaborated with Architecture Research Office (ARO) fron New York on a new, LEED Gold certified 256 bed dormitory for Tulane University on the historic Newcomb Quad.

The exterior of Barbara Greenbaum House, through massing, brick masonry, and window proportions, reinforces the character of its historic setting and neighborhood context. The site design preserves existing mature live oak trees while the entry sequence through the building’s central courtyard provides shade in a hot and humid climate, and is also a dynamic gathering place for students.

Inside, a generous stair in the entry lobby encourages physical activity, and exterior walkways connect residents to the outdoors. The upper floors group rooms into efficient clusters, each with shared social, study, and circulation spaces facing the courtyard. All bedrooms are oriented outward for privacy, and maximize daylight and views out to campus. Exterior materials such as brick, metal, concrete, and cast stone were selected and detailed for their intrinsic qualities and durability. Light filled interiors include flexible furniture, while colored concrete floors and wood ceilings bring warmth to common areas.
