House on Northline
Metairie, Louisiana
Inspired by Andrea Palladio’s Villa Valmarana, the severe entrance facade of this 6,000 s.f. residence for an ophthalmologist on Northline Street in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie is a direct response to the owner’s desire for privacy within a suburban context. The house is conceived as a series of layers in plan and section, which are revealed as one moves through from street to garden. Natural materials (natural wood, nocce and cross-cut travertine floors and counters, rough field-cut stone fireplaces, unpainted cast stone columns) are contrasted against the smooth, neutral-toned walls of the house.
